2022-23 SAGU Women's Basketball Season Preview

October 24, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: On Saturday, October 29th, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women's basketball team goes to Lubbock, Texas, to play their opening game of the 2022–23 campaign against Lubbock Christian University (LCU).

The SAGU women's basketball team, coached by Michael Sons, will endeavor to improve upon the 10-19, 7-15 record from the 2021–22 season, which was punctuated by a defeat to Southwestern Christian University in the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.

A single SAGU women's basketball team member was selected for the All-Freshmen and Honorable Mention teams of the Sooner Athletic Conference. All fourteen members of the SAGU women's basketball team were regarded as freshmen on the court; hence the squad did not lose any seniors.

SAC Preseason Poll: Before the 2022–23 season, SAGU is listed as the No. 9 team in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) preseason women's basketball poll, the SAC revealed on October 18th.

The Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament tips off with quarterfinals on campus sites on February 23rd, 2023. The league tournament returns to the Gaulke Activity Center on the Mid-America Christian University campus for the semi-finals and championships on Feb. 27-28.

A glimpse of the Lady Lions Roster: A wealth of talent has been recruited to the women's squads to complement the nucleus of young, talented players.

The top returners for the Lions are Autumn Moore, a sophomore guard from Lubbock, TX, who averaged 11 points and three assists in the 2021-22 season.
Jazra Williams, the Lady Lions' second-leading rebounder, will use her height and mobility to control the paint action. Another returning player, Neeley Tilley-Bedick, can significantly increase her scoring output following a summer of dedicated training.

Taylor Moravcik, Wendy Clemmons, and Macy Smith are three of the Lions' top newcomers.

The forward from Shallowater, Texas, Taylor Moravcik, who formerly attended NCAA Division II Angelo State University, moves to SAGU and supplies the Lady Lions with an excellent post-scoring presence to compliment their roster's abundance of long-range shooters. Moravcik, who won a State title as a junior in high school, will try to use her expertise to improve the women's team's chances of succeeding right away.

The Lady Lion's offensive onslaught will be led by floor general Wendy Clemmons from Allen, Texas, a Division II transfer from Arkansas Tech University. Clemons adds a soothing demeanor to the guard position, for she will make wise judgments in tight late-game situations, whether finding open teammates with pinpoint passing or outracing her opponent off the bounce with her exceptional quickness.

Macy Smith, a long, lanky defender and superb 3-point shooter is another Division II transfer from Oklahoma Christian University. Smith ranked second in Region II for 3-point shooting at 41.1 percent, won an NJCAA Region II championship, and qualified for the national tournament.

Talented freshmen Cailyn Tucker from Seven Lakes High School and Jennah Savage from Saint Thomas' Episcopal School were signed by the Lady Lions. Both guards are exceptionally athletic freshmen who rebound above their stature and have outstanding quickness with the ball in their hands.

More information about the head coach Michael Sons

Michael Sons, commencing his third season as the women's basketball team's head coach at SAGU, is eager to begin a fresh campaign with his revamped lineup. With a focus on academic excellence, excellent character, a firm faith, and high effort and rapid fast play to complement basketball skills, Coach Son's brand of basketball embodies these values. "As we start year two with this roster, I am excited about our group! These girls work so hard, and their attention to detail is off the charts. They make it fun for me to come to work every day! We return most of our roster from last year. We added some really good transfers that will bring some maturity and experience to us. We will play a tough non-conference schedule, but we love to do this because our conference is so tough night in and night out! Our up-tempo style and our love for defense make us a team that is fun to watch! We expect to improve this season, and we hope to see growth daily," SAGU head women's basketball coach Michael Sons noted.

"We are focusing on being prepared for our battles in life and on the court. One of our team verses is Jeremiah 12:5, "If you have raced with men and they have worn you out, how can you expect to run with the horses of excellence?" We want to work so hard that we can compete with anyone and be excellent at everything we put our hands in! W.E. is our acronym; it stands for Win Everything! Whether it's a drill in practice, a daily class assignment, or picking up trash someone dropped on campus, it doesn't matter. Win that moment! Make championship choices," Michael Sons went on to say.
